Martin Pyykkonen

Martin was captivated by early travel from his roots on the east coast to the wide open expanse of the west. At the time his strong interest in photography was developing, he followed the mantra “move west” - and will never move back. He has now been photographing in the west for more than 30 years and uses everything from antique film cameras and methods to the latest in digital imaging technology.

It’s more than coincidence that he moved east to west, as he has always been inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s life story and her influence often shows in his work. While Martin spends a lot of time out in nature and enjoying the big sky and expansive views, the images that he ‘sees’ and captures are often more like the ‘scene within the scene.”

While landscape beauty can be seen in many parts of the west, Martin often focuses on aspects of texture, shape, geometry and unique lighting in his images. He uses minimal, if any, digital image manipulation as he prefers to get it right in camera from the start.
